May 6 (Wed)
Honolulu/Tokyo
A late morning flight will take us from Honolulu to Tokyo.
May 7 (Thurs) Tokyo

May 8 (Fri) Japan Hobby Show

Tokyo Big Site

We will depart the hotel at 8:30 am for the 33rd Annual Japan Hobby Show, the largest hobby craft show in Japan.  The show hosts a wide range of domestic and Hobby Industry Association member craft suppliers exhibiting a variety of products.  Nearly 800 exhibitors are expected from all parts of Japan as well as the U.S.   You will be able to find “oshibana”, quilts, paint crafts, “Ribbon Art Crafts”, and many more.  In addition, various workshops and demonstrations on these crafts will be held, in which you may participate if you desire.  Last year over 100,000 people attended, but because we are going on the first day, this is the least crowded day of the show.  The group will not return to the show, but the ticket is valid for the entirety of the show and you may return at your leisure.
May 9 (Sat) Sugamo/Nippori/Ameyoko/Akihabara
After spending the day at the show, we have a good idea of the wide variety of crafts that can be found in Japan.  Our first stop will be Sugamo City, known as the old people’s Harajuku.  We will be able to find great deals on clothes, towels, purses, and more.  Next we will go to Nippori, Japan’s textile district.  From there we head to Ameyoko cho, a wholesale area where we can find all kinds of snacks, from cookies to candies to konbu and other Japanese food specialties.  We close the day with a visit to Japan’s Electric Town, Akihabara.  At night this area is lit by hundreds of neon signs.  Known previously for its electronic bargains, it has also become noted for drawing the anime or Japanese Animation crowd.  Yodobashi Camera is a huge eight floor building which truly embodies all that Akihabara has to offer.
May 10 (Sun) Shinagawa/Kamata

Shinagawa Intercity Flea Market

This morning we will visit an indoor morning flea market in Shinagawa.  This indoor market is three floors and has a wide variety of items including second hand kimono.  Weather permitting, we will try to see a large outdoor flea market.  After lunch, we will head to Kamata City, which has specialty handcraft stores.  There is Yuzawaya, a crafter’s dream store, and many 100 yen stores.  Everything from beads to cords can be found in this area.

May 11 (Mon) Asakusa/Kappabashi/Asakusa Bashi
We head to one of Japan’s most popular tourist areas, Asakusa.  What draws us there is Nakamise Dori, a shopping area that holds small knick knacks that are used in handcrafts.  From there we will head to Kappabashi Dogugai an area that wholesales kitchen supplies, everything from plastic food to the kitchen sink.  Our last stop will be at Asakusabashi, a whole sale area where we can shop for sumie paint, Heiko brand products, beads, paper goods, stationary, wrapping paper and more.
May 12 (Tues) Tokyo/Honolulu

Yatsu Rose Garden

Our flight departs in the early evening, so in the morning we will visit Tsukiji Morning Market for seafood omiyage, such as scallops or tsukudani.  Next we head to Tokyo Tower to get a glimpse of the city from a higher vantage point, as well as to see another of Japan’s iconic buildings.  From there we head to the Yatsu Rose Garden to see 700 varieties of roses from all over the world for a moment of relaxation.  Our last stop before we head to the airport is a visit to a local shopping center where you can stretch your legs and have a late lunch on your own.
