Lima

Since we arrived so late the night before, the morning will be free to relax.  In the afternoon, we will head for a city tour.  Among the places we will visit are the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru, the largest museum in the city and the Huaca Pucllana, a pre Incan temple in the middle of the city.

Day Four
Lima to Cuzco to Urubamba

We check out of our hotel and head back to the airport for our flight to Cuzco.  Upon our arrival we will continue on by bus to Urubamba where we will spend the evening.

August  Day Five
Urubamba to Machu Pichu

Today, we will spend exploring the lost city of Machu Picchu.  Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, this Incan wonder remains an incredible testament to the ingenuity of the Incan people.  Despite being returned to the public eye nearly a hundred years ago, much is still unknown about the site.  But the mystery bids its visitors to imagine what might have taken place so high in the mountains.  Bingham believed that it was a fortress, while others believe it to be the estate of a powerful Incan.  Regardless of what academics may believe you can decide for yourself as you take in the wonders of Machu Picchu.

August
Day Six
Machu Pichu to Cuzco

In the morning we enjoy the mysterious serenity that surrounds Machu Pichu.  We then return to Cuzco where we will spend our day here touring Qorikancha, an Incan temple to the Sun, which once housed 4,000 priests and attendants and was used as the foundation of a Spanish church.  A 1953 earthquake destroyed parts of the church, but revealed a surviving structure below.  We will also explore the Catedral.  Built in 1550, it is a beautiful building central to the town and has a nice collection of art as well.  Nearby is the Museo Inka, famous for its collection of Incan mummies.

August
Day Seven
Cuzco

Today will be spent touring the area around Cuzco.  We will visit the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, the amphitheatre of Qenko, the fort of Puka Pukara, and the cavern lodge Tambomachay.

August  Day Eight Cuzco to Puno

We leave Cuzco for the final time and enjoy a leisurely train ride to Puno, the Peruvian port city along Lake Titikaka.  The largest lake in South America and the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titikaka has many small islands preserving the ancient culture indigenous o the area.  Puno is known as the Folklore Capital of Peru.

August  Day Nine Lake Titicaca Excursion

We venture out into Lake Titicaca to visit the Uros Islands and Isla Taquile.  The Uros Islands are artificial islands made of reeds.  The people are descendants of a people who preceded the Incas.  Isla Taquile is a small island that works very hard to preserve its culture and is noted for its fine knitted products.

August  Day Ten Puno to Lima
We leave Puno this morning for Juliaca where a flight will take us back to the capital of Lima.   In the afternoon we will tour several sites in the city.  We will see Plaza de Armas, the Palacio de Gobierno, the Catedral, and the Iglesia de San Francisco.  The Plaza de Armas figures prominently in Peru's fight for independence from Spain and has served as the city's center since 1535.  The Palacio de Gobierno is the official residence of the Peruvian President and was built on the site where Francisco Pizarro was murdered in 1541.  The Catedral is where Pizarro's tomb is located.  The Iglesia de San Francisco, which is a wonderful example of Lima Baroque Architecture with incredible pieces of art and creepy catacombs.
